What is a gastroenterologist?
A gastroenterologist is a physician with dedicated training and unique experience in the management of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Gastroenterologists must first complete a three-year Internal Medicine residency and are then eligible for additional specialized training (fellowship) in gastroenterology. This fellowship is generally two to three years long so once their training is complete, gastroenterologists have had five to six years of additional specialized education following medical school. Gastroenterologists also receive dedicated training in endoscopy, the use of narrow, flexible lighted tubes with built-in video cameras, to visualize the inside of the intestinal tract.
