How to practice social distancing

Social distancing can help stop the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Here are some things that are safe for you and your family to continue and other activities that require caution or should stop altogether.

Remember: The goal of social distancing is to prevent close contact with others.

It's safe to:
  • Go for a hike or walk
  • Read a book
  • Take a bike ride
  • Cook a meal as a family
  • Watch a movie
  • Meditate
  • Play a board game
  • Video chat or call friends and family
  • Clean your house
  • Or enjoy other similar activities in your home or outside that don't require close contact with others
Use caution to:
  • Shop in stores
  • Eat or get takeout at restaurants
  • Or visit other spaces where there is the potential to come into close contact with others or where germs likely live on surfaces you may touch
It's not safe to:
  • Travel for nonessential reasons
  • Go to group events (concerts, sports, etc.)
  • Host play dates
  • Socialize in groups
  • Attend birthday parties and other gatherings
  • Visit people if they (or you) are sick
  • Or partake in other group activities where it's difficult to avoid close contact with others
