Pool Therapy

Aquatic (pool) therapy has been used for centuries to aid in healing. It combines warmth and the buoyant properties of water with physical and occupational therapy techniques to reduce stress, increase movement and assist in rehabilitation. Pool therapy helps people recovering from physical symptoms that often accompany stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, chronic pain and Guillain-Barre syndrome. Others who may benefit from aquatic therapy include those with:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic low-back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Arthritis
  • Hip or knee pain
  • Osteoporosis

Pool Therapy Benefits (buoyancy of the water):

  • Supports weak muscles and reduces stress on joints
  • Reduces the load to the spine, allowing movement with less pain
  • Allows earlier return to activity after an episode of increased pain
  • Provides resistance to movement with minimal equipment
  • Provides increased sensory stimulation and support to assist with balance during exercise

Ridgeview Rehab Specialties, in cooperation with AmericInn in Waconia, offers aquatic therapy for those who have a medical need. You need not be able to swim. The maximum depth of the pool is five feet. You must have a medical condition which necessitates the use of aquatic therapy, and a physician’s referral may be required for insurance coverage.
