Developmental Norms by Age Group

By six months I can:

  • Follow sounds and movements by turning head

  • Move arms and legs easily

  • Roll over

  • Coo, gurgle, squeal, laugh, babble

  • Raise head while lying on tummy

  • Become quiet when a familiar voice is heard

  • Startle to loud noises

  • Enjoy being soothed, touched and cuddled

  • Reach for and hold objects

  • Try to put everything in mouth



 

By nine months I can:

  • Creep or crawl

  • Recognize familiar people vs. strangers

  • Say “mama” or “dada”

  • Imitate sounds

  • Stand holding on to support

  • Hit two objects together

  • Understand simple words like “no-no, "bye-bye" or "all gone”

  • Sit without assistance


 

By 12 months I can:

  • Wave “bye-bye”

  • Show affection

  • Say words in addition to “mama” or “dada”

  • Walk while holding someone's hand

  • Show emotions (happy, sad, angry, discomfort)

  • Demonstrate an interest in other kids

  • Feed self with fingers/spoon/cup



 

By 18 months I can:

  • Try putting on shoes

  • Point to things when named

  • Let you know what I want

  • Walk without help

  • Speak 10 to 20 words

  • Bring objects to show you

  • Imitate behaviors

  • Look at something across the room that is pointed to



 

By two years I can:

  • Jump, run and climb stairs

  • Sometimes use two-word sentences

  • Refer to self by own name

  • Learn rules, but not follow

  • Explore new places and things, knowing you are nearby

  • Return affection (hug, kiss)

  • Use pretend play



 

By three years I can:

  • Talk and usually be understood

  • Use three-word sentences

  • Pedal a trike

  • Kick a ball

  • Copy drawing a straight line

  • Name six body parts

  • Play briefly with other kids

  • Learn to handle and may express emotions

  • Pay attention longer


 

By four years I can:

  • Ask questions

  • Dress self (except for fasteners)

  • Put together a seven- to 12-piece puzzle

  • Climb up/down a slide

  • Match/name colors

  • Retell favorite stories

  • Understand simple rules

  • Share and take turns, but be possessive

  • Understand danger


 

By five years I can:

  • Follow a three-step direction

  • Cut with a scissors

  • Copy familiar shapes

  • Draw a person with six to eight body parts

  • Catch a bounced ball

  • Count to 10

  • Predict what might happen in a familiar book

  • Play organized games

  • Talk to familiar adults and kids
