The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) has awarded national approval to Ridgeview Medical Center. As the country’s primary approval organization, the Commission on Cancer sets the standard for cancer care programs nationwide.
The requirements for accreditation include a well-integrated program with an effective cancer committee, monthly tumor conferences, computerized tumor registry and continuous quality improvement initiatives. The Ridgeview cancer program has successfully implemented all of these programs in addition to the research and screening. “Currently only 24 percent of the more than 6,000 general/surgical facilities in the U.S. have approved cancer programs,” says Paul Sperduto, MD, Ridgeview Cancer Committee co-chairperson. “These approved centers diagnose and treat 80 percent of all cancer-related cases in the nation.”
